Virus Warning on Yahoo Groups

Postby giZZy » 22 Jan 2010, 08:18

I got this warning today in my regular Emails. Now I think I understand where the trojan scare came from.

DO NOT check your group messages through the groups homepage. This goes for ANY YAHOO GROUP right now.

The yahoo servers seem to have a virus attached to them right now. I do not know how long it will take them to fix it.

This virus is VERY tricky. When it hits your computer, It will pop up a WINDOWS security window. And trust me, it looks EXACTLY like A Microsoft windows message. It will tell you that you need to run/install a virus scan and if you click ok, It will start to download a virus Into your computer.

It is VERY OFFICIAL looking, So please do not be fooled by this.

If you get a message like that, You need to completely turn off your computer. Don't click anything. Just cut the power supply. Then you can reboot And you need to do a FULL Virus scan.

This appears to only be happening When people are checking The messages by going To each groups homepage And it appears to only Be happening at random.

So for a while, Until we can know they have it fixed, DO NOT Check messages from the homepage. Just read them through Your regular email And you should be fine.

I haven't had one single thing like this come up and I've been checking on well over 50 groups.
I've got a fully up to date AVG running and it hasn't found anything.

This sounds more like phishing from a advertiser or from a previous site that someone visited.

Keep your anti-virus software up to date and if you do get something telling you to run a virus scan, close your browser (use the red x at the top right) and run your own virus scan software. And that goes for pop ups from anywhere, not just yahoo

Please don't pull the plug on your computer - it can cause problems if you "shut down" in that manner - one big problem can be corruption of the MBR which means you aren't going to be able to re-boot. Shut it down nicely and reduce the risk of further problems.

Shani wrote:Yup I got hit with that one! Then my PC crashed hard core. Wiped out my external drive too when I tried to reload windows because it was still plugged into my PC. I was able to recover most things but lost pics of my kits.

The virus embedded itself into the registry and you can not get rid of it. We initially thought we had gotten it but it had left trails and things were popping up like mad. The weird part of the virus is it will make your screen go green and tells you there is a virus and you need to scan. It has this very official looking security thing from Microsft, even copies the dern symbol for the MS Internet security symbol. It's something called "Internet security 2010" I believe. It's very serious, do NOT click on anything that pops up from it. I ran full virus scan and full spybot stuff and it came up with nothing like that virus was telling me I had.

My suggestion would be back up everything that you can, before you reboot with your operating system software. Make sure all your extra's are unplugged, like your external drive.

Oh and I got it from something that attached itself to something I had downloaded something earlier in the day. It sat dormant all day until after my computer to go into sleep mode and then made itself known later than night when my husband got on the computer.

Make sure your antivirus software is up to date and a good one! You never know what will attach where and what will crash it.

Yeah... It really is sad... They may as well also go take advantage of someone's grandmother while they're at it...
